SDL Group Ltd has purchased 32 licences of SAP Business One software from AlphaGen as a replacement for their existing stock control, sales contact management, e-commerce and accounts systems.

The fact that SAP Business One made it easy to manage all company operations from a single integrated application, running on an industry-standard MS SQL database, appealed to both company management and users.

SDL Group was founded in 1977 and now operates from 10 UK sites. The group comprises three trading brands: Surridge Sport, SDL Trophies, and Incentives-UK.

Surridge Sport (originally named Stuart Surridge) has been established in the sports industry since 1867. Building on its outstanding heritage, Surridge is enthusiastically embracing the future: its team-wear range, for instance, has experienced excellent year-on-year growth.

SDL Trophies is a trophy and medal wholesale specialist that supplies thousands of trophy and medal retail outlets worldwide. In addition to trophies and medals, the company also supplies plaques, shields, crystal and glassware.

Incentives-UK provides innovative, top-quality promotional items and business gifts. These are tailored to the needs of individual corporations and sports clubs, and are supplied rapidly at sensible prices.

As the company has grown its systems have expanded and become more cumbersome, with a DOS-based Athena solution being used to manage accounts, stock, sales and purchasing; the web-shop tool Actinic handling e-commerce; and the sales team using Access databases for Customer Relationship Management (CRM). With reporting from each system becoming more time-consuming, duplication of and inconsistency between information from the different systems proliferated, with the inevitable result that no one could rely on the information retrieved.

SAP Business One has enabled SDL to unify its systems in a single database. The advantages are clear:

·         easier system maintenance helps cut IT costs

·         reporting is more accurate, thereby increasing managers’ confidence in the information on which they base their decisions (a key factor missing from the old systems)

·         users have greater visibility of information (with restrictions, of course) from right across the organisation, thereby breaking down the ‘invisible walls’ that often exist between different departments in all growing companies.

Link Research

Link Research has purchased 64 licences of SAP Business One software from AlphaGen in order to replace their existing stock control, sales contact management and accounts systems. The fact that they could manage all the company operations with a single unified application, running on an industry-standard MS SQL database appealed to company management and user alike.

Link Research has been in full time operation since September 1992, after being founded by David and Len Mann. Drawing on their experience of running successful manufacturing companies, including Link Electronics, Vinten Broadcast and Cabletime, their aim was to build a new company in the field of professional television. Since then Link`s Encoder/Modulators and Wireless Camera Systems have become market leading products.

Their systems had grown with the company – Sage Line 50 was used to manage accounts, GoldMine Customer Relationship Management software is used by the sales team, while stock and product information was tracked using a database system developed in-house. This meant that reporting from each system was time-consuming, and often information from different systems did not agree with each other.

SAP Business One will unify all of these systems into a single database. This means that system maintenance will be easier, cutting IT costs. Reporting will be more accurate, giving managers confidence in their information. And there will be more visibility of information across the organisation since users can be given views (albeit restricted ones) of other peoples information. Management expects this to break down the ‘invisible walls’ that often exist between departments in all growing companies.
